Arabic Language School Founder Will Not Sue NYC [on Debbie Almontaser]

The founding principal of an Arabic-language school who was forced out of her job will not sue New York City’s Department of Education.

Debbie Almontaser said she felt it was time for her to move on even though a federal commission had ruled that the city discriminated against her.

In March, the city called the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s finding “totally unfounded.” It argued that Almontaser resigned voluntarily.

Almontaser was principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy. She left in 2007 amid controversy over her interpretation of the word “intifada.”

She said in a statement Tuesday that filing a lawsuit “would mean reliving the unfortunate and painful events.”
