In a decision that likely means the closing of the school, a federal judge has ruled against Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TiZA) in its bid to remain open while it challenges a new state law governing charter schools.
The ruling by Judge Donovan Frank comes hours after TiZA learned the state has denied a request for the school to switch to a new authorizer, a state-approved overseer required for all charter schools.
The decisions, taken together, mean the school won’t be in compliance with the new law, which takes effect Friday. It was not immediately clear what action the state will take, but officials have said that charter schools without approved authorizers cease to exist in the eyes of the Education Department.
