Marist School Senior Ashley Burke will travel to Morocco in June where she will take 20 hours of Arabic courses as a result of a scholarship she recently earned, according to Marist’s website.
Burke will spend six weeks this summer studying Arabic as a result of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y). This State Department-sponsored program provides merit-based scholarships to high school students for language immersion programs in uncommon foreign languages.
Burke will take 20 hours Arabic courses at the Qalam a Lawh Center for Arabic Studies. Her scholarship includes a pre-departure orientation and re-entry program in New York, roundtrip travel to the host city, tuition and academic supplies, room and board, and educational and cultural excursions, and medical benefits.
