Salaita Case Likely to be Hot Topic Today on Campus

There will be two opportunities on the University of Illinois campus today to discuss the Steven Salaita case and the related issue of academic freedom.

The Academic Senate holds its first meeting of the school year and Chancellor Phyllis Wise will preside over the meeting with senate chair and UI Professor Roy Campbell. Later in the evening, an editor with the American Association of University Professors will deliver a talk about academic freedom at Allen Residential Hall.

The senate meeting will begin at 3:10 p.m. in the second-floor ballroom in the Illini Union. The location has been moved there to accommodate a large number of expected guests.

Members of the campus’ quasi-legislative body expect a vigorous discussion about the board’s recent decision to reject Salaita’s appointment to the American Indian Studies program.
