UCF Judaic Studies Offers Modern Hebrew Culture Course

The Jewish Studies Program at the University of Central Florida will offer one Culture course in the upcoming summer semester, Session A, which begins May 16. The course will be “Modern Hebrew Culture,” taught by Dr. Kenneth Hanson. The class will meet Monday through Thursday from 10-11:50 a.m. in ENGR 327.

The aim of the course is designed to teach about the development of the State of Israel—the political and ideological struggle for the establishment of the State of Israel, with emphasis on forces that shaped contemporary Israeli society and politics, its culture, literature and science. It will also probe the cultural and geo-political issues facing the region and examine possible solutions to its multiple conflicts. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required.

Students may take the course as elective or as a required course to satisfy requirements for a minor in Judaic Studies (8 credits of the Hebrew language and 18 credits of upper division courses). A Certificate in Judaic Studies is also available for students completing five courses in Judaic Studies (15 credits). Interdisciplinary Studies students are encouraged to take a minor in Judaic Studies. Students who take a minor in Religious Studies, Humanities or Middle East Studies are encouraged to take courses in Judaic Studies. Most of our courses may be counted toward their minors.
