The University of Texas has evacuated six student from Egypt amid the political unrest following the ousting of President Mohamed Morsi, according to a Thursday article by the local National Public Radio affiliate, KUT.
According to the article, the students were studying there as part of UT’s Arabic Flagship Program and were flown to Morocco to continue their studies. The students were evacuated late Sunday night or early Monday morning, the article stated.
The Arabic Flagship Program is an intensive undergraduate Arabic study program in which students are given the opportunity to student in Alexandria, Egypt and Meknes, Morocco.
According to the KUT article, 30 graduate students studying in Egypt under the Center for Arabic Study Abroad program, which UT sponsors, were evacuated Wednesday for security reasons. None of them were UT students, according to a Wednesday article by the Austin American-Statesman. CASA is another intensive Arabic study program. It offers students the opportunity to study at American University in Cairo.
