Dad accused of having daughter cut in FGM procedure is cleared

The taxi driver from the inner city area of Bristol was adamant the procedure was not carried out, and evidence was found to be lacking

A dad has been cleared of allegedly allowing his daughter to have female genital mutilation.

The 29-year-old dad, who lives in an inner city area of Bristol, faced a charge of assaulting/ill-treating/neglecting a child or young person to cause unnecessary suffering or injury.

The case related to an allegation that a Type 4 female genital mutilation (FGM) procedure was carried out on his daughter, due to an injury found on her when she was aged six.

A court order is in place to ensure the child’s anonymity, so the dad cannot be named for legal reasons.

After a week-long trial Judge Julian Lambert directed the jury to acquit, after finding a lack of evidence, meaning there was no case to answer.
