Eighteen Islamic organisations in the Netherlands received some €10m in funding from Kuwaiti charitable organisations between 2007 and 2015, the NRC said on Tuesday.
The figures come from a confidential overview of foreign donations given by Kuwait to the Dutch foreign affairs ministry, the paper said. Sources had briefed the NRC about the findings.
The NRC says this is the first time that a Gulf state has given the Dutch government information about funding and officials were not previously aware of some of the donations.
The document shows that the Utrecht mosque Al Fitrah received money from the Revival of Islamic Heritage Society, which is included on the US list of organisations funding terrorism. The document shows that Al Fitrah recieved money from the organisation in 2012 to build a new mosque, despite denying this claim last year, the NRC said.
The document only covers donations from charities, not private individuals. Some extremely moderate organisations also benefited from extra money for a wide range of uses, including paying for Korans to distribute and new mosque buildings, the paper said.
