Discussion of a resolution that would dedicate a portion of Restlawn Memorial Gardens for purchase and use by members of the Islamic faith was removed from the City Council agenda at the beginning of Thursday night’s meeting.
A citizens’ group had requested that the city pass a resolution that dedicates about 40 plots in Restlawn described as “Spaces 1-10" for purchase and use by members of the Islamic faith. However, the resolution acknowledges that the city cannot restrict the purchase or use of burial plots based on religious affiliation.
“Any person may be buried therein, regardless of his/her religious or non-religious affiliation,” the resolution states.
Pocatello physicians Fahim and Naeem Rahim had sought to secure a part of the cemetery for family members and others of the Islamic faith in the Pocatello area.
