The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the successful applicants for its Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) program, a successor to the Obama administration’s Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program.
While fewer Islamists than last time appear to benefit from this most recent round of government funding, there is one possible, notable exception: Muflefhun, which has been awarded two grants worth a total of over $825,000.
Mufelhun was founded by Mohamed Magid, Suhail Khan, Adnan Ansari and Humera Khan.
Mohamed Magid is imam of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) and former head of the Islamist-founded Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). In 2002, federal agents raided ADAMS because of its apparent involvement in a terror-financing network. In 2007, federal prosecutors named ISNA an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror finance case in U.S. history, leading the Justice Department to cancel events at which Magid would be present.
Adnan Ansari is a former senior official of Islamic Relief USA, a branch of the terror-connected Islamic Relief charitable franchise, designated as a terrorist organization by Israel and the United Arab Emirates, and which is under investigation in a number of European countries over its promotion of extremist clerics and ties to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Islamic Relief USA, meanwhile, has a long history of embracing anti-Jewish officials and clerics.
Are Ansari and Magid today moderates - committed to fighting extremism? It’s difficult to be certain. But it is of note that in just 2018, at the ADAMS annual dinner, Magid hosted and shared the stage with Siraj Wahhaj, the infamous imam of the at-Taqwa mosque in Brooklyn, who has denounced homosexuals, non-Muslims, and “Satanic” America, and has advocated jihad and the killing of adulterers.
This is an enormous boost of cash for Muflehun, whose 2018 tax returns show revenue of just $20,000.
The Middle East Forum recently published a detailed report examining the flaws of the CVE industry. The Trump administration’s TVTP program, we warned, appeared to be just as flawed as the program it replaced. With Muflehun chosen as a government partner, and with no dedicated anti-Islamist voices among the list of other grantees, it seems we were right to be worried.
In 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump promised that “support networks for radical Islam in this country will be stripped out and removed one by one.” This hasn’t happened. Speak to your congressman, write to DHS’s Office for Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention - ask them why, given the many moderate and reformist Muslim activists and organizations in America, the government has decided instead to fund one with links to radicalism and hate.
