TV channel to explain Islamic principles could be set up in Russia - Medvedev

A TV channel could be established in Russia that would clarify the principles on which Islam is based, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said.

“As for religious education on TV, since we have television, it needs to be normal, modern and ethical,” Medvedev said at a meeting that addressed support for religious Muslim organizations in the North Caucasus.

“We are now switching to digital broadcasting, which will expand our opportunities. And I believe that we could think about finding a [television] channel within the new broadcasting structure that would teach and comprehensively clarify [the principles] of Islam, which is traditional for our country,” the president said.

Such clarifications must be prepared by good imams and professional theologians, Medvedev said.

“It would be right. We will work on this issue. I mean that such a channel would certainly be in demand in regions where our Russian Muslims live,” he added.
