University of East London bans segregated Muslim event from its premises

I blogged yesterday about this “segregated” Muslim event organised by the Islamic Society of the University of East London, due to happen tonight at UEL’s main lecture theatre on its Docklands campus.

Much to my surprise, UEL immediately banned it from their campus. See the reaction below by Peter Tatchell, who brought this to public attention:

UEL should be congratulated over this. As I pointed out, it has an “equality and diversity” policy. It didn’t know that the dinner organised by the Islamic society – which was to include a speech by the controversial anti-gay preacher Murtaza Khan – was segregated by sex and was providing a platform for an extremist.

The university’s decision to pull the plug on this immediately – no ifs or buts – is in contrast to the way colleges of London University habitually cringe when Islamists demand special treatment. Well done.
