About the Job
The Middle East Forum (MEF), a Philadelphia-based research and activist organization, is seeking a full-time Director for the Iran Freedom Project & Editor for the Iran Freedom Monitor. This unique dual role is ideal for a driven professional passionate about democratic reform, skilled in program leadership, and adept at shaping editorial content. The position provides an opportunity to spearhead a high-impact initiative focused on empowering Iranian civil society while overseeing a dedicated news platform that amplifies calls for democratic change in Iran.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Project Leadership (Iran Freedom Project)
- Strategic Direction & Management
- Set and refine the overall vision for the Iran Freedom Project, ensuring alignment with MEF’s broader mission.
- Oversee a range of activities designed to support and strengthen pro-democracy activists inside and outside Iran, including secure digital resource distribution.
- Program Development & Coordination
- Organize and lead cross-border workshops that connect Iranian diaspora leaders with experts experienced in nonviolent resistance.
- Establish and nurture international partnerships with civic and advocacy groups, ensuring resources and best practices flow effectively to Iranian activists.
- Coordinate a structured mentorship program (“incubator”) to identify and support emerging Iranian dissident leaders, providing them with strategic guidance, logistical support, and potential micro-grants.
- Network Building & Compliance
- Strengthen relationships with Iranian diaspora communities, bridging local activists and global supporters to create a cohesive, multifaceted coalition.
- Ensure activities adhere to legal, regulatory, and security standards, including secure communications practices and resource sharing.
2. Editorial Leadership (Iran Freedom Monitor)
- Content Strategy
- Develop and implement editorial guidelines for the Iran Freedom Monitor news website, focusing on high-quality reporting and analysis of democratic reform efforts in Iran.
- Identify emerging stories, trends, and voices in the pro-democracy landscape; commission articles and op-eds from subject-matter experts and local contacts.
- Editorial Oversight
- Supervise daily publishing workflow, ensuring consistent editorial standards, accuracy, and integrity of all content.
- Collaborate with translators, graphic designers, and contributors to produce compelling, multimedia storytelling aligned with the site’s mission.
- Digital Engagement
- Expand the site’s reach to diaspora and international audiences through social media, newsletters, and targeted outreach campaigns.
- Monitor web analytics to gauge reader engagement and refine editorial strategies accordingly.
Candidate Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) in international relations, journalism, political science, or a related field.
- Minimum five years of experience in program management, advocacy, or journalism, preferably with a focus on human rights or Middle East affairs.
- Core Competencies
- Demonstrated leadership in designing and managing multi-faceted initiatives (e.g., civic engagement, democracy-building, or policy advocacy).
- Strong editorial judgment and familiarity with journalistic standards, particularly in covering sensitive political issues.
- Proven ability to build, motivate, and coordinate diverse, cross-cultural teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Farsi or other regional languages is an advantage.
- Adept at digital tools for secure communication, content management, and data analysis.

Work Schedule & Location
- Full-time, exempt position.
- Location: This position can be based at MEF headquarters in Philadelphia or performed remotely within the United States. Occasional travel may be required for conferences, workshops, or international events.
